Aftermath of Persian Wars

Two Leagues Created Greeks do not want to be caught off guard again; create alliances Athens creates the Delian League Main city- Athens, many other allies Spartan creates the Peloponnesian League Main city- Sparta and few other allies

The Delian League Pericles becomes the leader of Athens He was honest and fair Skillful politician and inspiring speaker Had popular support for 32 years A wise and able statesman who led Athens through its golden age Takes funds from Delian League to rebuild Athens

The Delian League Creates a new empire that is stronger and that flourishes Art and architecture advance Philosophy and learning Science and sculpting Three Goals for Greece 1. Strengthen democracy 2. Hold and strengthen the empire 3. Glorify Athens

1. Strengthen Democracy Introduced Direct Democracy – a form of government where the citizens rule directly and not through representatives. Pericles extended democracy so that most adult males had an equal voice

2. Strengthen Athenian Empire Strengthened Athens’ navy It was the most powerful navy in the Mediterranean Athens’ strong navy ensured the safety of its empire

3. Glorify Athens Pericles rebuilt Athens after the destruction of the Persian Wars Built the Parthenon using marble, gold and ivory.

Causes After the Persian War tension was building for years. Athens had supreme power and others resented them. Controlled the Delian League (map next slide)

The Peloponnesian War Civil war between Sparta and Athens Fought b/w Delian and Peloponnesian Leagues Sparta declares war in 431 BCE Athens tries to battle at sea, but wont work Sparta traps Athens on the acropolis Holds them hostage Two events led to a loss for Athens Plague hit inside the Athens walls Sneak attack of soldiers is destroyed; Athens surrenders

Effects of the War Ended the reign of Athenian greatness Weakens all areas of Greece Leaves feelings of hatred Athens is burned and destroyed Corruption replaced good citizenship People lost faith in democracy Leaves Athens open to attack from Macedonia
