GOD’S PARENTING OBJECTIVE HEBREWS 12:3-11

God’s Parenting Objective 11/22/2015 God is the Father of our spirits, including our children Heb. 12:9 God gave us children Psalm 127:3 God gave us instructions for raising children 2 Peter 1:3 Believe in God’s wisdom 2 Pet. 1:5-8 We cannot succeed or be good parents if we do not know what God’s purpose is for making us parents Heb. 12:10-11

The Need for this Lesson You have forgotten the exhortation v.5 STAY FOCUSED! v.1-2 Attitude toward God’s chastening v.5-6 God’s attitude (love) toward us v.6 How God treats us as His children v.7 Child w/o training = child w/o a father v.8 Respect father who corrects us v.9 Earthly fathers not perfect like God v.10 God’s holiness, peace, righteousness v.11

God’s Parenting Objective Based on Hebrews 12:3-11, God wants children to grow into people who choose (v.10) to willingly submit to His will for holiness (v.10), peace and righteousness (v.11) What if every parental decision was deliberately made with God’s holiness in mind? We usually give little long-term thought to the effects of our decisions (often “little” issues) Does this bring child closer to God & His way or closer to the world and farther from God? Does this encourage child’s love for God or world or self?

3 Goals to Reach God’s Parenting Objective 1. Self-control vs. self-indulgent (selfishness) Actions based on what God says is right; not by feelings or passions 1 John 2:16, Prov. 14:12 2. Wisdom vs. foolishness Prov. 1:7 To strive for it, child must know what is holiness Must understand need for control (meekness) Control implies authority God’s standard of behavior is to be “in control” 3. Responsibility vs. irresponsibility 2 Cor. 5:10 Subjects himself to control, chooses actions Self-control + Wisdom + Responsibility
