Fridays for Future Why do we learn science when you “British PM says children are wasting lesson time. That may be the case. But then again, political leaders have wasted 30 years of inaction. And that is slightly worse!” @GretaThunberg Why do we learn science when you don’t listen to scientists? We live with your choice Our planet is changing – why aren’t we? Like the oceans, we rise! Climate   Cycling Europe-wide, half of all car trips are under 3 miles If all EU nations had reached Danish cycling levels between 2010-2020, this would have provided 5%-11% of the total emission reductions needed to reach EU 2020 targets. Quantifying CO2 savings of cycling European Cyclists’ Federation, 2011 Worldwide urban transport emissions, and transport energy use, could realistically be reduced by 11% by a series of policies to significantly raise use of bikes & e-bikes. Cycling   Transport The Scottish government has at last started putting significantly more cash and effort into cycling as a means of transport in recent years. [admittedly not enough, and admittedly the main cash rise was only 2 years ago] Yet cycle use in Scotland overall is roughly static. Indeed since it is rising in places, e.g. Edinburgh & Glasgow, it must be falling in some other places. What is the explanation??

Cycling   Transport Expanding & upgrading the main road system means… Outside urban centres - more & faster motor traffic In towns & cities - more pollution & congestion Driving longer distances becomes easier, so… Shops, workplaces and other facilities can set up further away People (with cars) can live further from shops, workplaces, etc Cash is limited: more for road growth = less for sustainable Thus cycling conditions deteriorate… Some trips (e.g. commuting, shopping) get longer, or too long Roads (especially A & B roads) become more hostile There is less cash for sustainable & active travel.
