Division Mnemonics By Mrs. Reyes Division Made Easy!
Definition Review Division-splitting into equal groups; symbols include ÷, /, and the long division ) Divisor- the number you divide by Dividend-the number being divided Quotient- the answer Remainder- the amount left over
Dad, Mom, Sister, Cat, Brother, Rover Dad=divide Mom=multiply Sister=subtract Cat=compare Brother= bring down Rover= remainder/repeat
Dad=Divide 1 5)825 05 5)267 Check and see if the divisor goes into the first number of the dividend. (does 5 go into 8--can you make 1 or more groups of 5?) If not put a 0 as a place holder and move onto the two digit number.
Mom=Multiply 1 5)825 5 05 5)267 25 Now multiply the number you just wrote with the divisor. Put that number under the digit(s) in the dividend.
Sister=Subtract 05 5)267 -25 1 Subtract the two numbers. 1 5)825 -5 3
Cat=Compare Is the difference smaller than the divisor? If no--the number you multiplied by was too small--try again. If yes, go on to the next step. 05 5)267 -25 1 5)825 -5 3
Brother=Bring down Bring down the next number. 1 5)825 - 5 32 05 5)267 -25 ↓ 17
Rover =Repeat/Remainder After you bring down the next number you start the process all over again with brought down number. If there is still a number left over that is the remainder. 165 5)825 - 5 32 - 30 25 -25 00 053 R2 5)267 -25 ↓ 17 -15 2
And the QUOTIENTS are….. 165 & 53 Remainder 2
Don’t forget to check your answer using multiplication 1 53 X 5 265 + 2 267 3 2 165 X 5 825
