Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) By Dr. Hadia Kadhim Judran

Major components in materials science and engineering: Structure of a material usually relates to the arrangement of its internal components. This term i. e. structure can be studied on the basis of: -Subatomic level: structure involves electrons within the individual atoms an interactions with their nuclei. -Atomic level: is the structure involves the organization of atoms or molecules relative to one another. -Microscopic level: which contains large groups of atoms that are normally agglomerated together. -Macroscopic level: involves the structural elements that may be viewed with the naked eye.

A property is a material feature in terms of the kind and magnitude of response to a specific imposed motivation. All-important properties of solid materials may be grouped to different categories are: mechanical, electrical, thermal, magnetic, optical, and chemical stability.   Processing, this term indicated to the way in which it has been processed into its final form. The structure of material certainly will affected by type and conditions of material processing as heat, mechanical, or magnetic treatment. Performance, the materials performance will be as a function of its structure, and properties.

4. To create new materials that has unique properties. Why Study Materials Science and Engineering? 1. To know the required properties of the material which serving the application. In addition must be there is logical compromise between two or more properties of the material. 2. Take into consideration of any damage or decay of material properties that may occur during the use as a result of elevated temperature or environmental conditions. 3. Selection of the material based on the cost .A material may be found that has the ideal set of properties but is expensive. 4. To create new materials that has unique properties.
