MIGRATION AS A RESULT OF WAR – WW2 Year 5/6 Miss Black

W.A.L.T About immigration schemes that results in post WW2 migration from Europe to Australia About push and pull factors of immigration

World War 2 – What do we already know? When did WW2 end and who won? When did WW2 begin and what caused it? Who was the main leader behind the WW2 atrocities? 1939-1945

1940 – Germany attacks Denmark and Norway, followed by the Netherlands and France September 1, 1939 – Germany invades Poland Britain and France declare war on Germany Early 1941 – Italy, an ally of Germany, invaded North Africa and Greece 1943 – Battles of Stalingrad and Kursk, Germany retreated from the Soviet Union Late 1941 – Germany invades the Soviet Union June 1944 - British and American forces launched the D-Day invasion on German occupied France 1945 – Germany surrendered after the suicide of their leader Adolf Hitler

POST WW2 IMMIGRATION TO AUSTRALIA Between 1947 and 1982, over a million Britons emigrated to Australia The majority of these migrants travelled under the ten pound assisted passage scheme funded by the British and Australian governments. Encouraged as part of Australia's 'populate or perish' nation- building initiative, which emerged in the aftermath of World War II The scheme allowed for affordable travel to Australia, with the cost of an adult ticket a mere £10, and all children traveling for free by the 1960s  220 pounds which would be equivalent to about 398$ How much would this be today? (in dollar amount)

Populate or Perish Immigration Scheme 1945 Led by Immigration Minister Arthur Calwell Sought to overcome resistance to immigration after WW2 Key to boosting Australia’s economic interests Also necessary to boost population for military safety in the event of future wars – during WW2 Australia had been on the verge of invasion from Japan Focused on British people but also saw some refugees and displaced people from Eastern Europe
