CLASSIFYING MATTER

MATTER: anything that has mass and takes up space Heterogeneous Matter: a sample of matter that has parts with different compositions Homogeneous Matter: a sample of matter that has uniform characteristics throughout

Pure Substance: any variety of matter all part have identical properties and composition Elements: pure substance that can not be decomposed by a chemical change Compounds: 2 or more elements chemically combined

Homogeneous Matter Pure Substances Solutions: a uniform mixture of particles of various sizes

Mixtures: 2 or more substances physically combined Heterogeneous matter Solutions
