What is Billie Jo’s outlook on life? Let’s Discuss… . What is Billie Jo’s outlook on life? How are Billie Jo and Daddy coping with Ma’s death? How are Billie Jo and Daddy getting along? 3

Let’s Discuss… . What sort of relationship do Billie Jo and Daddy have at this point in the novel? Billie Jo’s and Daddy’s relationship is disintegrating. They don’t talk anymore, and both seem to be living their lives separately. There is some evidence that Daddy is trying hard to move on with his life after Ma’s death. He has started night school, and has been meeting some ladies to spend time with. Billie Jo is still suffering terribly from the loss of her mother. She doesn’t seem to be able to find a place for herself. 3

Let’s Discuss… What textual evidence do we have of this? . What textual evidence do we have of this? “We don’t talk much. My father never was a talker. Ma’s dying hasn’t changed that. I guess he gets the sound out of him with the songs he sings.” (p. 112) “He’s making some kind of effort to get on better with me now, since I ‘did him proud’ at the Palace.” (p. 134) “I do mind his spending time with all those biddies.” (p. 139) 3

The characters are changing as the situation changes. Conclusion . The characters are changing as the situation changes. The tone is changing as well. 3
