How the Southern Defense of Slavery Turned Our Country Towards War The Antebellum South How the Southern Defense of Slavery Turned Our Country Towards War

Revolutionary Principles Southerners thought the north had abandoned the principles of the revolution Just as England would take raw materials from the colonies, so now does the north do this to the south

Why Did Poor Whites Fight? Within a slave society, poor whites were always one rung above slaves Remove the slave system and the poor whites would find themselves at the bottom rung doing slave work

Plantation Paternalism Just as children could not look after themselves, the slaves had to be protected by their masters or else they couldn’t function This gives rise to slave owner “paternalism”, a father like figure that would see over the welfare of slaves

Scientific Justification for Slavery PHRENOLOGY is a “science” that supposedly used skull measurement and contouring to prove black inferiority POLYGENESIS put forward the idea that there were two human races…whites came from the Garden of Eden and black did not

Southern White vs. Black Women
