Unit 7: Systems of Equations

Things to remember: What is a system of equations? What is a solution of a system of equations? How is the solution written? How many solutions can there be to a system of equations? What are the three ways to solve a system of equations?

Steps to solving systems by Substitution: Solve one equation for y. Substitute this value of y into the other equation. Combine like terms and solve for x to find the x-coordinate of the solution. Lastly, go back and substitute this value in for x in the original equation to find the y-coordinate of the solution. The solution should be stated as the coordinate point (x, y).

6x + 2y = 𝟏𝟎 y – x = 1

x = −4 2y + 3x = 20

x = 5y+10 2x − 10y = 20
