Living in Britain

Most British people live in houses, some people lives in flats. The most common are terraced houses, semi-detached houses and block of flats, too. Most houses are built of bricks.

Block of flats Were built in the mid 20th century. They are sometimes 15 storeys high with several flats.

Terraced houses First terraced houses were built in the late 19th and early 20th century. They were built for working-class people. There are usually five or more houses joined together in a row. Terrace houses are quite small with two bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen and a small back garden.

Semi-detached houses Are very common. They are built in a pairs with one house joined to the other. Houses have three bedrooms and there is a garden at front and the back for each house.

Detached house The largest and expensive type of house is a detached house. This house is not joined to other houses and has a garden around it.
