What Mathematics can you see? Using photos and art to explore Numeracy

How many squares can you find on this chess board? How can you determine the area or perimeter of this chessboard? How do you know that you have found them all? How many lines of symmetry can you find? How many ways can you represent your thinking? What would happen to the area if we doubled the dimensions? Can you make a generalisation to determine the number of squares on a board with the dimensions 10×10 or 100×100?
