Korkeasaari zoo

Biodiversity Korkeasaari sees Biodiversity as their special task that they want to maintain. They are part of a campaign named Biodiversity is Us, which is an united attempt from all the zoos around the world at maintaining biodiversity

Educational programmes Nature school Arkki Arkki organizes programmes for students about endangering themes and the influence of nature protection.

Co-operation zoos the work of zoos is achieved by cooperation. Keeping that in mind Korkeasaari participates in many conservation programs such as: Waza, which is a unifying organisation for the world zoo and aquarium conservation and community

Breeding standards and their function In the conservation programs aims at making the animals of the zoo to reproduce. While aiming to breed the the animals, the zoo aims also to preserve the genetic origin and behavior of animals as natural as possible. In this work, biologists familiar with the species are provided with herding books, which are used to decide and select suitable couples. For example, Siberian tigers who have been born in Korkeasaari have traveled to different parts of Europe to their new mates

Endangered species Korkeasaari serves a safety place for many species which are almost gone from nature. Endangered species are for example the amur leopard, turtles and frogs. There is a protection patrol that protects the amur leopard’s ranges from fires and hunters

Health care The primary job of workers in korkeasaari is to take good care of all animals, more so of animals that are injured or in other ways unable to return to the wild. Its job is also to organize the strategic plans and objective.

Successful release to the wilderness Successful breedings While there are more, here are some of the endangered species which Korkeasaari has released: Bearded vulture Alpine goat Wildcat Eagle owl Golden eagle Korkeasaari has been successful in breedings since 1960 One example is the snow leopard, which Korkeasaari has managed to breed the most of in the world. Its 130 leopard cubs

Something special For normal people the easiest way to take part in protection work is by contributing money to one of protection projects. People can support by joining the nature protection organisation. It helps the organisations to continue. Korkeasaari has been working with the Finnish bakery company Fazer since 1999s.
