History of Darbuka Darbuka is the Arabic term, derived from the verb “darb” (stroke), for the single- headed goblet shaped drum. It is originated in Egypt. From ancient times to present it is usually made of clay.

Music in Ancient Egypt

The goblet shaped drums seen in Mesopotamia in the Babel civilization until around 1100 BC could be forefathers of the darbuka.

Darbuka Today Today’s modern darbuka is popular in North Africa (Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, etc.) the Middle East (Turkey, Syria, Israel, etc.), South Eastern Europe (Greece, Bosnia, Romania), Southeast Asia (Malaysia and Indonesia)

Types of Darbuka Egypt Type Clay Darbuka: It has two sizes including solo and bass. Goat or fish skin are used for the head.

Types of Darbuka Egypt type metal casting darbuka: Plastic skin is used for the head.
