Session 7 Highlights & Conclusions Alain LE ROUX France Telecom 7/14/2019

Session 7 – NGN oriented solutions and plans Presentation 1 “NGN complementing the Internet for converged networks” (Cisco Systems) NGN based on IP related or friendly Transport technologies to deliver Carrier class (i.e. reliable & secure) and Business class Internet services Presentation 2 “The 21st Century Network - Standards requirements” (BT) More services over a converged network with fewer network elements Several critical standards areas and some highest priority standards requirements identified Presentation 3 “Cable networks on the NGN road: IPCablecom and PacketCableTM Technologies and Development status ” (CableLabs & ECCA) Cable IP-based QoS enabled Multimedia service platform (XoIP) VoIP trials ongoing and commercial rollout planned in near future 7/14/2019

Session Highlights NGN service rich packet-based modular platform, access agnostic Service convergence over IP, end-to-end (IP/MPLS) packet intelligence and deterministic traffic handling With open standard interfaces between service control and Platforms Interworking with legacy networks/services and Internet applications Integrated OSS and Web-based management & provisioning Interconnections between Network domains/carriers for IP based services are becoming important Radical network convergence to fewer networks and systems carrying more services, converging in from the edge Cable Networks towards NGN: PacketCable 1.x and PacketCable Multimedia specifications (all issued or about to) 7/14/2019

Session Issues NGN business model requires rethinking legacy paradigms Need to ensure VoIP/VoATM/PSTN interworking SIP-BIC-ISUP interworking is currently a high priority. BICC adopted in UMTS UTRAN, but which role in fixed networks? More important to converge in access and backhaul (where capex & opex are most significant) than in core Fewer network elements (supporting more capabilities), all with distributed intelligence, security, VPN & OSS functionality Is that compatible with distributed and separated transport-session-service control ? Cable Networks: access specific or fully network specific systems? Why does SIP-based Call Network Signalling (CNS) need to be specific? Which interfaces could be common to xDSL/Fiber NGN access ? 7/14/2019

Conclusions & Recommendations Consensus on NGN being IP-based Multimedia enabled. Many (too many?) specifications/Standards emerging and products appearing on the market for access-backhaul-core segments: But do they fulfil Operators/Service Providers requirements? How to ensure that all the pieces of the puzzle fit together and interoperate? What about building NGN over 3G architecture & interfaces with necessary extensions/adaptations to accommodate wireline and fixed wireless access ? Recommendation : to avoid multiple different architectures and interface solutions for similar requirements (e.g. mobility mgnt, session control, resource & QoS control): Analyse system architectures and identify common (edge, core) requirements Identify extensions to existing specs required for xDSL & fiber NGN access Agree on the standards critical areas (with Framework harmonisation with Mobile & Cable: e.g. for Architecture, Signalling, Security, QoS, OSS Identify evolution scenarios and steps, and prioritise standards requirements 7/14/2019
