Welcome to Math Night Please take the time to work on the number sense problems as others are arriving!

Building Number Sense The focus is to build number sense through logical problem solving, rather than following a “rule.” “stretch your thinking!”

Example: Rounding What does it mean and why do we round? Why would the number line be helpful. 564,378 500,000 550,000 600,000

Rounding Word Problem Sam finished his video game and rounded his score to 45,000. What would be the highest score he could have earned on his game? What would be the lowest score he could have earned on his game? How would a number line help?

Multiplication Use your wipe off board to draw a visual model of: 3 x 6 = 18

Meaning of Multiplication 6 x 3 equals 3 x 6 Does 6 x 3 mean the same as 3 x 6? What is the meaning of the symbol x?

Let’s make up a story that matches this equation. 125 x 7= Let’s make up a story that matches this equation. How can you use your knowledge of place value to help solve this problem? Think of the meaning of each digit.

Place Value boxes. Place value boxes 100 + 20 + 5 7

Distributive Property Distributive Property of Multiplication Sometimes called partial product! What is being distributed? 7 x 100 = 7 x 20 = 7 x 5 =

Multiplication 2 by 2 What connections to place value would help you solve this problem? 32 x 76

Time for Centers Kids go with the 5th grade experts 2 groups (3rd graders/4th graders) Parents stay with me!

Place value division With place value boxes 162 divided by 4
