Trade in Mesopotamia

A Babylonian Trader’s journey Box # Details to tell about 1 You start in the city of Ur. Describe your caravan (people, supplies, etc.) 2 Travel north to Babylon. Describe advantages of the new roads. 3 Reach Babylon. Explain why this city is a center for trade (hint: check out the map on page 39) 4 Describe the bazaar and what items you trade and items you receive. 5 Explain how all of this trade impacts the city of Babylon. 6 Describe the last part of your journey to the city of Ninevah in the north.

Main Ideas about Babylonian trading My caravan (group of travelers journeying together) included my friend Karen, my sister Lynn, and five camels. Our supplies include one hundred bronze swords and fifty pounds of Egyptian spices. We traveled north along the Euphrates River to Babylon. The king just had new roads built, which makes our journey easier. Before it took us a week to reach Babylon, now it only takes us two days.

Main Ideas about Babylonian trading We finally reached Babylon! The city is a great place to trade because it is located in between cities to the south and cities to the north. It became sort of a pit stop for traders! Once we get to the bazaar I am amazed at all the exotic food and items! We immediately trade our swords for twenty pounds of Indian cotton!

Main Ideas about Babylonian trading All of this trade makes the city of Babylon very rich. We can tell from all the fancy architecture! Finally, we head north to Ninevah. We hope there we can sell our spices for a new cart!

Final Activity With your group, examine the trade route map of southwest Asia. Brainstorm: How did the increase and spread of trade impact people? Using the organizer, come up with as many “effects” as you can. CAUSE = increase and spread of trade

CAUSE = increase and spread of trade Effects: People are able to get a wide variety of goods Creates the “haves” and “have nots” (rich people vs. poor people) Spreads ideas (religion, inventions, etc.) People may develop a “trade” language- where everyone can speak it Spread diseases more easily
