Council of Trent (1545-1563) Refused to compromise on any belief. Salvation by faith and works. Established education for priests. Developed means of dealing with heretics: Holy Office - Church’s FBI Index of Forbidden Books A meeting of church officials meant to addresses the Protestant’s claims Outcomes: Reaffirmed Pope’s supremacy Reaffirmed 7 sacraments and necessity of priests Salvation by faith AND works Reformed priest’s education & dedication

Rise of the Jesuits Founded by St. Ignatius Loyola Big on missionary work. Follow the 4th vow- do whatever the pope requests of you.

Scientific Revolution

Pre-Scientific Revolution Ptolemaic/Geocentric Theory- earth is the center of the galaxy - other planets revolve around it. Things get more perfect the closer they get to Heaven THEN CAME…

Scientific Revolution Heliocentric Theory- sun is the center of the universe (Copernicus). Imperfect heavenly bodies (Galileo); (bye, bye Aristotle’s crystal spheres) Dominated by reason, natural laws (Newton’s 3 laws of motion) Watchmaker (Deist) God Emphasize the influence of the renaissance on the change in thoughts regarding science. Also emphasize that s rev. was an elite movement.

Great Scientists Copernicus-Heliocentric Theory Galileo- telescope: planets were actually imperfect spheres (disproves old Aristotle’s views). Newton- calculus and gravity prove new theory Kepler- 3 laws of planetary motion: planets move in elliptical, not circular orbits. Bacon- Scientific Method. BIG THEME: Reason isn’t good enough anymore. You must be able to prove theories! Consolidate!
