(A) kitaj1e99 at permissive temperature (Kita++) had wild-type complements of melanophores and melanoleucophores, but at restrictive temperature (Kita–) were deficient for melanophores and lacked all melanoleucophores (asterisks). At intermediate temperature (Kita+), melanophores were abundant but locations normally harboring melanoleucophores were devoid of these cells (asterisk, Left), populated by melanophores (arrow, Left), or had fewer melanoleucophores compared with permissive temperature (arrowhead, Right).
