Brief Assignment 9

Description: First, review your Draft 1.1. Consider the following: Objective: To demonstrate your ability to revise paragraphs at the sentence level Purpose: When you revise papers, you begin by reexamining content and organization of the paper overall before moving to more specific concerns such as the thesis, introduction, and conclusion. Usually, one of the final steps involves revising the body paragraphs to ensure that they reflect your intended purpose and reach your intended audience. This final brief assignment will help you accomplish that. Description: First, review your Draft 1.1. Consider the following: Does the initial focus of your draft as expressed in your thesis statement need revision? Are your purpose for writing and target audience easily identified after reading your draft? If you need to revise your thesis (and thus, a substantial portion of your paper), or if you need to better focus your purpose and identify your audience, your revisions of your body paragraph might start with those areas. You may need to make sure that your main point(s) are restated clearly and that your readers understand the implications of your analysis. For this assignment, use the guidelines from Chapters 4, 5, 50, and 53 in the St. Martin’s Handbook to revise a substantial body paragraph (i.e. at least 4 sentences in length) from your Draft 1.1. Paste the original paragraph from your 1.1 draft into the assignment so that your instructor will be able to compare the original with your revision. Finally, write a short summary and evaluation of your revisions. Identify and explain which strategies you used in revision and explain how these revisions achieve your purpose for the paper. The total length of the analysis should be 350-500 words, NOT including the original and revised body paragraphs.

BA 9: The Breakdown Original Body Paragraph: Revised Body Paragraph: Please make sure to label clearly your revised and original body paragraph. If you do not, you will get marked down. Original Body Paragraph: One of your original body paragraphs from Draft 1.1. Revised Body Paragraph: Correct and necessary components in set structure. This is your revised body paragraph. Summary & Evaluation of Revisions: Be as clear and specific as possible. Identify and explain which strategies you used in revision and explain how these revisions allowed you to improve your body paragraph. (350-500 words, NOT including the original and revised body paragraphs.)

BA 9: The Breakdown Remember: Please make sure to label clearly your revised and original body paragraph. If you do not, you will get marked down. Remember: You must choose the body paragraph that you feel is the weakest one in your rhetorical analysis. By doing this, you are saving time and revising your weakest body paragraph first. Additionally, you will be provided with more feedback on how to improve that paragraph.

Components of an Effective Body Paragraph (for a Rhetorical Analysis) Step 1: Begin each body paragraph with a clear topic sentence that states the rhetorical choice to be discussed and also ties back to the thesis statement, particularly the persuasive purpose. Note: Please remember to not include a quote in your topic sentences. Body paragraphs do not begin or end with a quote.

Components of an Effective Body Paragraph (for a Rhetorical Analysis) Step 2: Provide the example (quote) of the rhetorical choice. Notes: 1.) Integrate your quote and cite it (Boroditsky 101). 2.) If necessary, provide context/summary before or after the quote. 3.) You can provide more than one example in your body paragraph, but please remember not to have examples back-to- back. You need to have quote/analysis and then the next quote.

Components of an Effective Body Paragraph (for a Rhetorical Analysis) Step 3: Provide analysis of the rhetorical choice (explain how the specific audience is persuaded by the rhetorical choice to do/believe what the author wants them to do/believe). Notes: 1.) Remember that the analysis is more than just saying that the audience is persuaded or that the author persuades the audience. HOW is the audience persuaded? Connect the dots for the reader. 2.) The majority of your body paragraph should be analysis while only 10-15% (sometimes 20%) of the body paragraph should be quote material.

Does it state the rhetorical choice to be discussed? Body Paragraph: Step 2 After the topic sentence, did the student provide the example (quote) of the rhetorical choice? Y/N, Please provide appropriate feedback. Is the quote integrated? Did they cite it appropriately? EX: (Naughton 202). Please provide appropriate feedback. If necessary, did they provide context/summary before or after the quote?

Body Paragraph: Step 3 Does the body paragraph provide the analysis of the rhetorical choice? Y/N, Please provide appropriate feedback. Does it clearly and thoroughly explain how the audience is persuaded?
