When working with the children ensure to join in with their play When working with the children ensure to join in with their play. Model the correct language, vocabulary and questions. The more the children are exposed to this the more they will begin to use it in their everyday narrative. Provide a rich text environment by ensuring all areas of learning are provided with key words, labels, pictures and books to support that topic or theme. Designate reading sessions daily whereby an adult can share a book with the class, group or individual. The more exposed a child is to reading the richer their vocabulary will be. Provide meaningful talking experiences e.g. holiday news, celebrations, familiar events, talking about their successes in school or how they have made a certain model. This will engage the speaker as well as the listener and will allow children to express themselves freely. Speaking Extends vocabulary, especially by grouping and naming, exploring the meaning and sounds of new words Uses language to imagine and recreate roles and experiences in play situations. Links statements and sticks to main theme or intention. Uses talk to organise, sequence and clarify thinking, ideas, feelings and events. Introduces storyline or narrative into their play. Plan lots of conversation starters e.g. If I was a super hero for a day I would?.... Would you rather be as tall as a tree or as small as a bug? Encourage children to express their ideas and opinions and listen to others sensitively. Encourage friendly debates and model questioning each others ideas. www.earlybirdyeducation.com
