Archaebacteria and Eubacteria Chapter 18 Section 2 Archaebacteria and Eubacteria
Bacteria
2 Kingdoms of Prokaryotes Archaebacteria: live in extreme habitats ex. Cow stomach, ocean vents. Eubacteria: live almost everywhere else These bacteria probable arose from a common ancestor billions of years ago.
Archaebacteria Environment Example: Geyser
Eubacteria Example
Factoids Can be heterotrophs and autotrophs. Some are chemosynthetic autotrophs: make own food by breaking down sulfur and oxygen. Some are aerobic and some anaerobic
Reproduction Binary fission: asexual reproduction in which chromosomes are genetically identical to the parent (most common) Conjugation: sexual reproduction where one bacterium transfers all or part of its chromosome to another cell (cont.on next p.)
Reproduction Cont. Through or on a bridgelike structure called a pilus. Results in a bacterium with a new genetic composition. Endospore formation: enable them to survive when conditions are unfavorable
