UAlbany Compliance Corner Rescheduling Games Reminder April 2019 Edition In The News The St. John’s (New York) head women’s volleyball coach failed to promote an atmosphere for compliance when she participated or directed others to participate in impermissible recruiting activity, according to a Division I Committee on Infractions panel. The committee found the head coach impermissibly arranged for a prospect to live with enrolled women’s volleyball student-athletes. As the prospect prepared for the SAT and another exam necessary for international students, the head coach provided or directed others to provide impermissible transportation to the testing center. To help her prepare for the exams, the head coach and a graduate assistant provided the prospect with free academic assistance. The prospect was also allowed to participate in open gym sessions after team practices. The committee found the head coach at times impermissibly observed her participating in the sessions and asked team members about the prospect’s participation. The committee noted when the head coach participated in or directed the activities, “she showed that rules compliance was not of foremost consideration as she administered her program.” She also requested that staff members commit the violations and was aware that they did so, which resulted in her failing to promote an atmosphere for compliance. Rescheduling Games Reminder With many spring contests having to be rescheduled due to inclement weather, we wanted to remind teams that these contests must be rescheduled prior to a conference tournament. As the season can not be extended to make up canceled games. Compliance Trivia Jalen Hands is a PSA who will be a member of the football team at UAlbany in the fall. In order to get acclimated to the college level Hands, a wide receiver, has been catching passes with his teammates prior to voluntary summer conditioning activities conducted by a strength and conditioning coach. During one of these sessions Jalen tears his ACL running a route. Can UAlbany finance his medical expenses? Answer on next page.

PSA Visit Tip Camp Emails in ARMS It is permissible to use a scoreboard or video board to show a video to a prospective student-athlete visiting the institution provided the video is not personalized to the prospective student-athlete (e.g., edited or unedited highlight video), is not created by an entity outside the institution and does not celebrate the prospective student-athlete's visit to campus. Camp Emails in ARMS As the summer camps season is quickly approaching, here are some tips to remember when sending emails in ARMS: When sending emails to PSAs who can’t receive general correspondence: Turn on the compliance exception. Make sure that the email does not include any recruiting language. Make sure that any images used are not of current student-athletes; and If you have any concerns it’s never a bad idea to just check with the Office of Compliance Services. Enrollment Deposit Deadline Please remind all your incoming PSAs that have already applied and have been accepted that the enrollment deposit deadline is May 1st.
