Today’s Goal: Learn to identify conflict and the types of conflict in a story. Outcomes: Describe what is meant by the term “conflict.” Explain two different ways of categorizing (grouping) types of conflict. Identify the type of conflict in a story using both ways of categorizing.

Starter #1: In literature, what do we mean by the term “conflict”? The problem that the main character faces What can you recall about the different types of conflict?

Starter #2: Cornell Notes on “Conflict” 1. In literature, what is conflict? 2. If you had to divide all conflicts into just two categories, what would they be? 3. What is an external conflict? 4. What is an internal conflict? 5. What is another way of grouping conflicts using three categories? 6. How would I place those three conflicts under internal and external? 1. The problem or struggle a character faces in a story. 2. External Conflict Internal Conflict 3. A problem posed by another character or by the environment. 4. A personal struggle within one’s self. 5. Person vs. Person Person vs. Nature Person vs. Self 6. External: Person vs. Person Person vs. Nature Internal: Person vs. Self 1) What the character does 2) What the character says 3) How other characters act around that character 4) What other characters say about that character 5) The character’s appearance.

Starter #3: Let’s see from Coach readings if you can identify types of conflict in a story. . . .
