The Idea of Evolution Charles Darwin British Naturalist Travels with the H.M.S Beagle from 1831 – 1836 Made many observations, perhaps most important ones from Galapagos Islands (off west coast of South America) Similar plants and animals on different islands had different characteristics Look at the map! Charles Darwin BrainPop

Evolution = the process by which species change over time Species = group of organisms that can mate to produce fertile offspring Population = all the individuals of a species that live in an area at the same time

He saw that the different species had different characteristics Darwin collected species of finches from the different islands and from mainland South America He saw that the different species had different characteristics Concluded that all may have come from the same species & changed over time to adapt to the different environments on the different islands Amoeba Sisters Natural Selection - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VM9YxmULuo

Four parts of natural selection 1. Overproduction: species produce more offspring than will survive

2. genetic variation – the offspring all have characteristics that differ

3. adaptation – the traits of some of the offspring are better suited for a particular environment

4. selection – the offspring with adaptations that help them survive in a particular environment are most likely to survive and pass their traits on to their offspring

I should also understand that… The environment changes over time. If a species does not have adaptations to help it survive, it will go extinct (all members of that species dies) Show Natural Selection SciShow ONLY THROUGH 6:00 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTftyFboC_M
