Introducing… Dr. Rusty Bartels – Rusty, Dr. or Professor Rusty, Dr. or Professor Bartels He/him/his PhD in Cultural Studies, Designated Emphasis Writing, Rhetoric, & Composition Studies Varied scholarly interests – currently thinking about the role that first year writing can play in developing executive function skills Transparent about pedagogy in classroom – will discuss why I’m doing what I’m doing Endeavor to make space for student experiences and interests

Freewrite Introduction On a piece of paper, please answer the following: Name as seen on Blackboard; Preferred name/nickname if different [aka how you would like me and your peers to refer to you in class] Preferred pronouns for use in class [please indicate if different for different spaces] Where are you from? What college & major are you in? On a scale of 1-10, how much do you like writing? On a scale of 1-10, how confident are you in your writing abilities? What are your strengths as a writer? What are your weaknesses? What do you expect this class to be like? What do you expect to learn? Is there anything else you want to share with me? (e.g. student athlete, accessibility needs, etc.)

Reviewing Materials - Syllabus Small groups – break out into groups of 2-3 for a total of 7 groups Group 1: Page 1 Group 2: page 2 Group 3: page 3 Group 4: page 4 Group 5: page 5 Group 6: page 6 Group 7: page 7-8 Introduce yourself to your group members – name, pronouns, college/major Each group will review & summarize what you identify as key information on that page, and present that information to the rest of the class.
