Micrometeorology of an ephemeral city: The Burning Man Experiment Andrew Oliphant , San Francisco State University, Dept. of Geography & Environment Micrometeorology of an ephemeral city: The Burning Man Experiment Project objectives: Investigate the impact of a rapidly changing ‘urban’ surface on background micrometeorology and local climate How does the city impact frictional properties of the surface? How does it alter the surface energy balance? What is the magnitude of the urban heat island (UHI) generated? How does the city contribute to surface-atmosphere exchanges of CO2? To share something with the citizens of Black Rock City

Experimental design Discussion instrumentation and tower location relative to city geography

CO2 fluxes The man burns During the main event (Wed 8/28 –Saturday 8/31) Daily average CO2 flux…………………………25.9 gC m-2 d-1. Daily total CO2 emission from the city………..121.6 tC d-1 Population density (approximate)……………. 12,000 people km-2 Daily total CO2 emission per person………… 2.3 kgC p-1 d-1 Theme camp setup Main event Exodus CO2 fluxes, should we show each step??
