The IndianaMap: A Brief History October 29, 2005 The Indiana State Government GIS Center of Excellence is formed The Indiana State Government GIS Center of Excellence is formed by way of a Memorandum of Understanding that brought together the Indiana Office of Technology, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Natural Resources, Department of Health, Department of Transportation, and the Department of Environmental Management to “leverage existing GIS investments and resources within state of Indiana agencies to meet the current and future needs of state government, as well as to provide support and guidance to all state agencies in the use of GIS.”

In addition, a layer has been added that shows locations of industrial parks (Indiana Department of Transportation). Updated layers... The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), Office of Land Quality, provided updated versions of their layers (18 layers). The color aerial photos taken in Spring, 2005, as part of the Statewide Orthophotography Project (provided by Indiana University, University Information Technology Services) were also added that month. On the first day the site had 23,000 unique visitors and 450,000 page views. A "tie card" is a written description of the location of a corner of a Section within the Public Land Survey System (PLSS). The layer shows points where scanned (PDF) images of tie cards are available for viewing.

Merger of GIS Atlas with IndianaMap The name of the Web site has been changed to IndianaMap. This change reflects a collaborative effort by the Indiana Geographic Information Officer, Indiana Office of Technology; Indiana Geological Survey; Indiana Department of Transportation; Indiana Geographic Information Council; and others to continue development of a single statewide map for Indiana. Although the name and appearance of the Web site have changed, its functionality and content will continue to be enhanced and regularly updated, as before.
