Cell Cycle Graphic Organizer For this Activity You will Need: Blue Colored Pencil Red Colored Pencil Green Colored Pencil Lead Pencil

Cell Cycle – Big Picture DNA copied DNA is equally divided Cell splits apart

Goal of Cell Cycle Goal: To make 2 identical cells with the SAME number of DNA molecules as the original cell Let’s follow how the DNA moves in this process. You will see that the DNA is moved very carefully to make sure that each cell gets the SAME amount.

1. Interphase 1. Interphase Cell Grows DNA Doubles Started with: 2 red chromosomes 2 blue chromosomes

2. Mitosis A. Prophase (P=Prepare) Centrioles A. Prophase (P=Prepare) Chromatin coils into duplicated chromosomes Nucleus disappears Spindle fibers shoot out from centrioles

2. Mitosis B. Metaphase (M=Middle) Spindle Fibers B. Metaphase (M=Middle) Spindle fibers pull duplicated chromosomes to the middle of the cell Duplicated Chromosomes

2. Mitosis C. Anaphase (A=Apart) Duplicated chromosomes split at centromere Fibers pull chromosomes to opposite ends of cell

2. Mitosis D. Telophase (T=Tear) Chromosomes uncoil into chromatin Nucleus reappears Spindle fibers disappear

3. Cytokinesis 3. Cytokinesis Cytoplasm & organelles divide Cell splits into two new cells

Cell Cycle – Revisit the Big Picture THINK! – What happens in each stage? 1. 2. 3. DNA is copied DNA is equally divided Cell splits apart into 2 separate cells
