CELEBRATE VOTING SYSTEMS In 1997, Mars the confectionary company introduced their ‘Celebrations’ chocolate selection box onto the UK market. There has been a few alterations to the chocolates available in the box since that time and Mars would like to undertake some research to find out how popular the individual chocolates are. Not only would this allow them to know which chocolates to include in the Celebrations box but also the proportion of each chocolate in terms of the numbers that should be included in a box. As part of this process, we are going to vote on the most popular chocolates already included. Press space bar to continue

CELEBRATE VOTING SYSTEMS Your teacher is about to give you a voting slip. You must use this slip to vote on your favourite chocolates in the Celebrations box. There are 8 types chocolates – you must choose which are your favourite 2. On the voting slip put an ‘X’ in the first column to choose your favourite chocolate and a second ‘X’ in the last column to indicate your second favourite chocolate. Click to continue after voting has taken place

CELEBRATE VOTING SYSTEMS 4 Enter voting results: For each of the chocolates count up the number of votes for first preference. Click on the buttons next to each chocolate to increase the number of votes. Note: Keep the voting slips showing the second preference for later. 2 4 2 1 1 1 Click here to continue 1 16

CELEBRATE VOTING SYSTEMS Using this system, our Celebrations box would be full of: First Past The Post (FPTP) This is the method used to elect MPs to the House of Commons The candidate with the highest number of votes in a constituency election is the winner. As most constituencies have large numbers of people, the result is rarely a dead-heat Snickers, Galaxy, What are the advantages and disadvantages of this system? Advantages: Counting of votes is quick and easy Extremist parties less likely to gain power Disadvantages: Doesn’t reflect the ‘alternative’ votes which could be the majority Smaller parties get less representation Leads to ‘tactical voting’

CELEBRATE VOTING SYSTEMS Using this system, our Celebrations box would consist of: List Proportional Representation (LPR) This is the method used to elect Members of the European Parliament in in the UK In each region, a number of members are elected per political party in proportion to that party’s vote So, if Party A got 40% of the vote, 40% of the members would be represented by that party. Advantages: Allows for more views to counted Can increase voter participation as people feel that their vote has more value 25% Snickers 12% Milky Way 25% Galaxy 12% Mars 6% Twix 6% Galaxy Caramel 6% Malteaser Teasers 6% Bounty Disadvantages: More complex – takes longer to work out who has won Can give more power to bigger parties if small party votes are fragmented What are the advantages and disadvantages of this system?

CELEBRATE VOTING SYSTEMS The Supplementary Vote system (SV) This is the method used to elect single-post holder positions such as the Mayor of London As well as indicating the favourite candidate, the voter has the opportunity to state who is the next favourite. If one candidate does not have over 50% of the votes, then only the top two candidates are retained and the 3rd, 4th, 5th etc candidates are eliminated. The second preferential vote of the eliminated candidates is then added to the remaining candidates to determine a clear winner. Chocolate Votes 2nd Vote Snickers 4 Milky Way 2 Galaxy Mars Twix 1 Galaxy Caramel MalteaserTeasers Bounty 1 2 2 1 1 1 1 1 Decide which are the top 2 candidates here (discretion may be needed). Use the 2nd preference vote of the eliminated chocolates and add them to the scores of the 2 remaining chocolates by clicking on the black numbers. (Click here when finished)

Using this system, our Celebrations box would be full of: Advantage: Ensures the maximum number of votes count Galaxy, Disadvantage: Doesn’t guarantee that the eventual winner will have the majority of votes What are the advantages and disadvantages of this system?
