The aim of this lesson is to be able to draw a bar chart and a line graph from a given set of data

A bar chart A survey was carried out to identify the types of vehicles travelling along a country lane. The results were as follows: Vehicle Car Bus Bike Lorry Tractor Number 11 4 7 6 3 We will now draw a bar chart.

What fraction of the children chose chicken? Reading Bar Charts Pupils in a class were asked to choose their favourite kind of food. The data is shown in the table below. How many children were in the class? What fraction of the children chose chicken?

Reading Bar Charts Pupils were asked to name their favourite kind of television program. The results below were obtained. How many pupils took part in the survey? What fraction of those asked liked soaps? What fraction of those asked liked films?

Reading Bar Charts Pupils were asked to state their favourite sport. The results are shown below. How many pupils took part in the survey? What fraction of the pupils preferred Hockey? What fraction of the pupils preferred Swimming?

Reading Bar Charts Pupils were asked their favourite holiday destinations. The results are shown in the table. How many pupils chose U.S.A.? How many pupils chose Africa? How many pupils took part in the survey? What fraction of the pupils asked preferred to stay at home?

Reading Bar Charts Pupils were asked to select their favourite subject. The results obtained are shown below. From the bar chart determine:- The total number of pupils who took part in the survey? The fraction of these pupils preferring maths the most?

Reading Bar Charts The results obtained by a group of pupils in a maths test are shown. The mark is on the horizontal axis and the number of pupils obtaining that mark is on the vertical axis. How many pupils sat the test? If the test was marked out of a score of 10, do you think the test was easy or difficult? If the pass mark is 5, how many pupils passed the test?

…and a final word about line graphs and trends 1 2 Graph 1 is said to show an upward trend. Graph 2 is said to show a downward trend.
