World War II and its impact on Texas Grade 7 Social Studies

What was World War II? WWII was a global conflict that involved almost every nation in the world. The U.S. was thrust into the war on Dec. 7, 1941, when the Japanese initiated a surprise attack on the U.S. naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

What was World War II? The U.S. war allies (partners) were Britain, Russia, China, and France. The Allied troops fought against Germany, Italy, and Japan.

What was World War II? The German leader was Adolph Hitler, head of the Nazi Party. The Italian leader was Benito Mussolini. The U.S. President was Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

What was Texas like before WWII? At the beginning of the war, most Texans lived on farms or in small towns. Women worked in the home and/or in the fields. There were few opportunities for minorities. How was Texas involved in WWII? Approximately 90% of the war effort oil came from Texas, so Texas fueled the U.S. victory of WWII. The Navy had a battleship named the “The USS Texas” which served in the invasion of North Africa.

What was the Economic impact of WWII on Texas? Oil and gas continued to boom as new oil fields were discovered. The movement from rural areas to the cities led to the urbanization of the state. What was the social impact of WWII on Texas? Women and minorities were afforded professional opportunities in the military and business that forever changed the face of the Texas work force. This led to the later Civil Rights achievements.
