What happens before a cell divides? 1. Please have these Items on your desk. Agenda Science Starters Sheet What happens before a cell divides? What does a sequence of bases in DNA form? Thursday February 2, 2017 Day 2

Steps in the activity Place the strawberry in the Ziploc bag. Gently mush the strawberry. DO NOT hit the bag. Add extraction buffer. Mush for 2 more minutes. DON’T forget to record the data. Put the coffee filter over the cup. Pour contents into the filter. Let sit about 10 minutes. Carefully squeeze the filter. Observe and record. Pour liquid into the test tube. Add the cold alcohol. Record observations. Remove DNA with a popsicle stick. Observe and record. Clean all materials and throw away the Ziploc bag.

Summary and Reflection Answer the questions on the back page of the hand-out. Summary and Reflection Rate yourself on your knowledge of DNA. Use your learning goals in your notebook. What did you find most interesting about this activity? What was the most difficult part of the activity? If you did this activity again, what would you do differently.
