Review Questions – W/ A partner What does the word Renaissance mean? Rebirth of learning What time period in world history preceded the Scientific Revolution? Middle Ages/Dark Ages Name two scientists and their discoveries Galileo/Copernicus (heliocentric theory), Newton (Gravity), Descartes (Scientific Method), Bacon (use of reason) What institution held the most power prior to the Scientific Revolution? Catholic Church

Prior to Scientific Revolution…. Middle Ages/Dark Ages After Fall of Rome, there was chaos. No one was safe Culture and education took a back seat to survival Catholic church was unifying force on the manor Feudalism was established as a means of protection from ‘barbarian’ tribes Only literate people were monks, nuns, church officials

Scientific Revolution Feudalism began collapsing as nation-states began to form As nation-states began to form, education began to return, new languages formed Scientists began to educate traditional “truths” that they had been told by Catholic Church (ie: Earth is center of universe, everything is as God wants it, have faith, etc) As scientists began to disprove the church, the church began losing power Revolution because it was a rapid change in traditional beliefs Scientists were excommunicated for their work

Important Scientists… Copernicus (theorized heliocentric theory) Galileo (proved heliocentric theory with telescope) Newton (gravity) Bacon (Scientific Method) Descartes (analytical geometry, plane system – forerunner of latitude/longitude)

Renaissance Scientists paved the way for other groups of academic study Began in Italy (major trade center, last strong hold of classical civilization) Humanism: Life in the now as well as religion Art (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) Literature (Dante’s Divine Comedy, Shakespeare, MACHIAVELLI) Gutenberg’s printing press Scientific revolution + Renaissance + Printing Press = Reformation, Exploration

What do they have in common?
