Land Governance and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Consolidating and Harmonizing Monitoring Initiatives Tuesday, March 20th, 2018 laura.meggiolaro@landportal.org

Land and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Platform Launched in September 2017 together with the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN), with support from the Omidyar Network. Aim: make information related to the land indicators in the SDGs widely available. https://landportal.org/book/sdgs

Monitoring land-related indicators 8 Targets & 12 Indicators The platform covers: 1.4.2 on land tenure security including perception of tenure rights; 2.3.1 and 2.3.2 on smallholder farmers, what they earn and how much they produce; 2.4.1 on agriculture area; 5.a.1 on ownership and share of land rights of women; 5.a.2 on legal frameworks for women’s land rights; 11.1.1, 11.3.1 and 11.7.1 relating to sustainable urban tenure and open spaces; and 15.1.1, 15.1.2 and 15.3.1 relating to forest areas, biodiversity and degraded lands.

Tracking Tier Status The platform provides a quick overview of the Tier status of each indicator. Tier 1: Established and data being produced Tier 2: Established but no regular data Tier 3: No established methodology

A timeline tracking important decisions

Indicator Details Each detailed indicator provides: A narrative description describing the indicator, methods for measuring the indicator, why the indicator is important and who is working on the indicator. The Tier status and key dates in the life of each indicator Links to the custodian agency and partners Official links Visualization of related data on the Land Portal A table of related indictors Links to library resources on the subject Related news and blogs

Example 1: Indicator 1.4.2 on perceptions of tenure Indicator 1.4.2 includes a range of indicators from the Global Property Rights Index – PRIndex, including: Rate of property documentation Perceived tenure security PRIndex currently covers 8 countries; As PRIndex expands to cover an additional 36 countries in 2018, this data will be integrated in the platform.

Example 2: Indicator 5.a.1 on women’s land ownership The Land Portal includes a wealth of data on women’s land ownership from diverse sources, including: Restricted Resources and Entitlements from the OECD SIGI Distribution of agricultural land area owned by sex from the FAO Gender and Land Rights database Formal recognition of women's rights from the World Bank's LGAF And many more…

SDGs Blog Series The SDGs blog series is a partnership of the Land Portal, the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI), the UN Sustainable Solutions Network (UNSDSN) and the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) It is an opportunity for key thinkers on issues related to land and the SDGs to share ideas and solutions. https://landportal.org/blogs/sdgs

Harmonizing Global Initiatives: What can the Land Portal do? Collaborate with Global Donor Platform to track land and the SDGs in a sustainable way. Partner with the Monitoring and Evaluation of Land in Africa (MELA) initiative adopts open data models. with the Global Land Indicators Initiative (GLII) in building the capacity of National Statistical Offices (NSOs) to track land indicators. Support Custodian agencies, such as the World Bank and UNHABITAT, to track progress and gaps in the measurement of land-related indicators. Shine a light on alternative indicators such as those tracked by the ILC Dashboard. And much more…
