Section 1: Geologic Time Chapter 3 Section 1: Geologic Time

A. Geologic time – Earth’s history is divided into time units that make up a geologic time scale. 1. Time units on the scale are based on the appearance or disappearance of types of organisms such as trilobites, index fossils that lived during specific periods of time. 2. Geologic time is divided into four major subdivisions.

a. Eons – longest subdivision; based on the abundance of fossils b a. Eons – longest subdivision; based on the abundance of fossils b. Eras – marked by significant worldwide changes in the type of fossils present in rock c. Periods – based on types of life existing worldwide at a particular time d. Epochs – characterized by differences in life-forms, but differences may be regional rather than global. 3. Geologic time can be subdivided only if fossils are present in rock records.

Use an analogy Just like there are different periods in your life, there are different periods in Earth’s life. For example, eras in geologic time are marked by major worldwide changes in the kinds or abundance of organisms. You might mark eras of your life according to major events, for example, a sibling being born, or changing schools. Think how you might divide your life into eras, periods, and epochs.
