Demons Questions and misconceptions about demons abound. The Scriptures give us insight into the origin, nature, and power of demons. The Scriptures also reveal why demon possession is not a modern day phenomenon.

Demons Similar to Angels in Origin: Angels and demons are created beings (Psalm 148:1-5; Colossians 1:16; Ephesians 6:12) Like fallen angels, demons fell from their original state (cf. 2 Peter 2:4; Jude 6) Angels and demons are both spirit beings (Hebrews 1:14; Matthew 8:16; Jude 6)

Demons Notable characteristics and activities: Demons are ruled by Satan and share his destiny (Mark 3:22-23; Matthew 25:41; Rev. 12:9) They could possess people in NT times (compare 1 Samuel 16:14) Demons harmed those they possessed (Mark 5:1-13; Matthew 17:14-21) Demons recognized Jesus’ authority and they feared Him (James 2:19) Demons communicated and worked together to do harm (Matthew 12:43; Luke 8:2)

Demons Demon Possession: Demon possession enabled Jesus to demonstrate His power over Satan (1 John 3:8; Matthew 12:22-29; Mark 1:27; Luke 4:36) Demons are subject to the authority of Christ, but not to one who falsely claims the authority of Christ! (Acts 19:11-16) Inspired messengers of Christ demonstrated their authenticity by showing power over demons (Luke 9:1; Mark 16:17-20)

Demons Is there Demon Possession Today? Miracles were to cease when their purpose was fulfilled (1 Corinthians 13:8-10) Modern day “demon possession” is unlike Biblical demon possession (Acts 19:11-16) The devil cannot force Christians to do wrong (1 Corinthians 10:13) The Scriptures teach that “unclean spirits” and “prophets” would depart from the earth at the same time (Zechariah 13:1-2)

Demons Demons are at work today! They are working to get us to believe false doctrine and have ungodly attitudes. “Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons” (1 Timothy 4:1) “But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic.” (James 3:14-15)
