PSY-105 Out-of-Class Activities

What are Credits and Why are They Important You must receive 3 credits of out-of-class activities if you are registered in PSY-105 If you do not receive all 3 credits, you will not receive a grade. An Incomplete will be assigned instead. You do have the whole semester to get 3 credits.

How to Receive Credits Participate in experiments Read and summarize articles from a Psychology Journal Any combination of the above two There are two activities that you can do to receive credits. They are participating in experiments and reading and summarizing journal articles. You may make any combination of these two to receive your 3 credits. For example, you can do two credits of participating in experiments and one journal article review.

Participating in Experiments Signup sheets are on the bulletin board outside of S&B 108 Write down the log book number, time and place of the experiment, and the contact number You MUST: show up OR give 24 hour notice if you will not make it Keep your credit slip verifying your participation If an experimenter does not show up, go to the psychology office and ask the secretaries for a form to complete To participate in a study, you must signup on signup sheets that are on the bulletin board outside of S&B 108. Find one that fits into your time and interests you. Look at how many credits the experiment is so that you can keep up with how many credits you’ve done. Write down the log book number, the time and place of the experiment, and the contact number. Writing down the log book number will help you remember which experiments you have already participated in. For most experiments, you may only participate once. If you sign up for the same experiment twice, you will only receive credit for it the first time. Therefore, keep up with the log book numbers of the experiments that you participate in. The log book number will also help me know who the experimenter is and help you address any issues that may arise. You must write down the date and time of the experiment so that you know where it is. If it is in a different building, be familiar with that building before arriving for the experiment so that you are not late or absent. You must write down the contact number incase you are unable to make the experiment. If you cannot make the experiment, you must give the experimenter 24 hours notice. If you do not, you will be penalized credits, which I will discuss on the next slide. You will receive a credit slip at the end of the experiment. Keep this slip to verify that you participated. You do not need to hand in this credit slip to your instructor. he/she will be given a weekly list of their students who participated in experiments. If by chance the experimenter does not show up, go to the psychology office and ask the secretaries for a form to complete, and I (Amber) will contact you about this. Or you can contact me at alc7767@uncw.edu (write on the board).

Missing an Experiment If you fail to give 24 hour notice and do not attend an experiment, or are late for the experiment, you will be penalized 1 credit If you miss two experiments, you will receive 2 penalty credits (for a total of 5 credits) AND you will no longer be allowed to participate in any experiments (you will have to summarize journal articles for your required credits) After you have missed two experiments, you will no longer receive credit for any experiments that you may sign up for If you fail to give 24 hour notice and do not attend the experiment, or are late for the experiment, there will be a penalty. If you miss one experiment, you will be assigned an extra-required credit, totaling 4 credits. If you miss two experiments, you will be assigned another extra-required credit, totaling 5 credits. Once you have missed two experiments, you will no longer be allowed to participate in any experiments, and you will have to summarize journal articles to complete your required credits. These rules apply even if you do not receive an email from me (Amber) stating that you have missed credits. It is your responsibility to keep up with how many credits you have received and how many more you owe. If for some reason people are still signing up for experiments after they have missed two credits (which is NOT allowed), they will not receive any credits for these experiments.

Summarizing Journal Articles 1-2 double-spaced typed pages with the title of the article, author names, and journal title Discuss: What the author is trying to accomplish in the work you read about What conclusions the author reached What types of research methods were used (e.g., experiment, survey, etc.) Any problems or weaknesses in the research that you notice or that were discussed in the article To summarize journal articles, the article must come from a psychology journal. You should find an article that interests you and that is easy for you to understand. The summary needs to be 1-2 pages typed and doublespaced. You should include the title of the article, the authors names, and the journal title. In the summary you should discuss what the author is trying to accomplish in the work you read about, what conclusions the author reached, what types of research methods were used, like an experiment or a survey, and any problems or weaknesses in the research that you notice or that were discussed in the article. Turn this into your professor.

Why Should You be Required to Participate in Experiments? As part of your general education of psychology, it is important that you be exposed to research via participating in experiments (or through reading journal articles) Increases the prestige of the University So why should you be required to participate in experiments. For part of your general education of psychology, you should be exposed to research via participating in experiments. If you continue to study psychology, you will learn how to run an experiment, but you should also see the opposite end, and participate in an experiment. Research also increases the prestige of the University. A university’s prestige is built upon research, and the more research that is done, the more prestigious the university will be. Therefore you should want to participate in order to increase the prestige of the University you will be graduating from. Thanks!!
