Preschool Focus Area 2 2.2 – I Have an Amazing Body Date: Begin With Me Focus Area 2 Date: Arkansas Migrant Education Program 2.2 – I Have an Amazing Body Big Ideas: My body has many parts. My body grows and changes. My body can move. A child’s world begins with self and family and gradually extends to the community in which he or she lives. This unit focuses on self. As children explore, they become aware of their unique characteristics. Not only will they learn more about themselves, but about others around them. Teacher Notes: Children are fascinated by their bodies and what they can do. Their bodies are an integral part of who they are – their “self.” When children are given opportunities to enjoy and be successful in experiences involving their bodies, they feel good about themselves and what they are capable of doing. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Activity: Materials: Book Here Are My Hands, by Bill Martin, Jr Chart paper /-ing/ words; vocabulary Butcher paper (to trace student and label parts of body) Music “Do the Hokey Pokey” Lesson Plan:__________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Letter Knowledge A child demonstrates knowledge of the alphabet/points out letters in books, or on signs and labels. Vocabulary A child understands and increasingly uses complex/difficult vocabulary Comprehension A child shows interest in books and understands stories read aloud Retelling – telling a story in their own words while building upon their vocabulary Sequencing – what comes first/next/last in the story Read Aloud: Here Are My Hands, by Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archambault Lesson Plan: Students will identify body parts and be able to describe what each does. Descriptive text will enhance vocabulary knowledge. Students can point to their own body as the story is read aloud. Notice how verbs end with –ing. Text rhymes. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Vocabulary: hands-catching/throwing, feet-stopping/going, head-thinking/knowing, nose-smelling/blowing, eyes-seeing/crying, ears-washing/drying, knees-falling, neck-turning around, cheeks-kissing/blushing, teeth-chewing/brushing, elbow, arm, chin, skin Family Connection and Engagement: ___________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Follow Up Plan: ___________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
