Kathleen Douglass Shelli Cutting Finding Your Zonta Why Kathleen Douglass Shelli Cutting

Why? “Start With Why” and “Find Your Why” by Simon Sinek Our WHY is the purpose, cause or belief that drives every organization or every person’s individual career Your why statement is universal Getting to your why is speaking from your core values

How do great leaders get people to want to be a part of what they do?

How are some people able to achieve things which defy all the assumptions? Delegates from the nine Charter Clubs who met in Buffalo, New York at the Statler Hotel on 8 November 1919

Corporate Example So, what makes APPLE more successful? Apple’s competitors have access to the same talent, same consultants and same media as Apple. So, what makes APPLE more successful?

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR Was not the only man who suffered in a pre- civil rights America! Not the only great orator of the day! So, Why is it that HE led the civil rights movement?

Can we name other leaders who galvanized change by their beliefs?

Do these two examples have anything in COMMON? Is there a PATTERN?

COMMUNICATE in the exact SAME way. There is a Pattern! They THINK, ACT and COMMUNICATE in the exact SAME way.

The Pattern is called… The GOLDEN CIRCLE

The Golden Circle – Typical People/Organizations Everyone knows WHAT they do

The Golden Circle – Typical People/Organizations Some know HOW they do it. Everyone knows WHAT they do

The Golden Circle - Typical People/Organizations Very few know WHY they do what they do Some know HOW they do it. Everyone knows WHAT they do

START WITH “WHY”! to inspire Think, Act and Communicate “Inside Out” START WITH “WHY”! to inspire

They are beautifully designed, simple to use and user friendly We make great computers (WHAT) If APPLE had ordinary marketing, communication, starting with WHAT…. Would that be inspiring? They are beautifully designed, simple to use and user friendly (HOW) Want to buy one?

Apple’s WHY Everything we do, we believe in challenging the status quo, we believe in doing things differently!

Apple’s HOW The way we challenge the status quo is by making our products beautifully designed, simple to use and user friendly.

We just happen to make great computers! Apple’s WHAT We just happen to make great computers! Wanna Buy One??

“People don’t buy WHAT you do. People buy WHY you do it! WHAT you do is just a proof of what you BELIEVE!”- Simon Sinek

Summer of 1963, 250,000 people gathered in Washington to hear Dr Summer of 1963, 250,000 people gathered in Washington to hear Dr. King’s speech

He didn’t tell people what needed to be changed in America. He simply told people what HE BELIEVED!

“I Believe!” “I have a Dream!”

People didn’t show up because of him! They came because THEY BELIEVED in what HE BELIEVED!

Activity Pair up with a partner and explain why you joined Zonta. Listener write down key phrases or verbs that you hear that describe an action. Switch roles and repeat.

Action Words Empower Honor Convince Encourage Mentor Promote Believe Others? Lead Act Facilitate Change Grow Develop Inspire Impact Influence Educate Evolve Encourage

Your WHY Statement should be Simple and clear – one sentence Actionable Focused on how you’ll contribute to others Expressed in affirmative language that resonates with you Evergreen – personal and professional To _____(contribution) so that _____(impact)

Impact To make people feel welcome and included in the club To change a life Creating opportunity Changing the mentality Empowering more members to step to leadership

Impact Improve the outcomes for others (girls and women through increased service, education and advocacy) To change the awareness of inequality and to speak out about the inequality in society

Example “To inspire people to do the things that inspire them so that, together, we can change our world.” - Simon Sinek

Example “To empower and educate people everywhere so that they can improve their lives and achieve their goals.” -Shelli Cutting
