Math 2-8: Warm-up

Math 2-8: Powers and Exponents Objective: How to use powers and exponents in expressions

Vocabulary base – in a power, the number used as a factor. exponent – in a power, the number of times the base is used as a factor. power – numbers written using exponents (represent repeated multiplication).

How to write and read powers: An expression like 2·2·2·2 can be written as the power 24. The base is the number that is multiplied. The exponent tells how many times the base is used as a factor. } The number that is expressed using an exponent is called a power.

Examples

Zero and Negative Exponents any nonzero number to the zero power is 1. any nonzero number to the negative n power is 1 divided by the number to the nth power.
