What We Will Do Today Learn about energy. Learn about properties of natural gas. Learn about natural gas safety – inside and outside. Play a review activity.

What is ENERGY ? It is the ability to do work or cause change.

Energy Sources 1.Nonrenewable: Fossil fuels - coal, natural gas, oil 2.Renewable: wind, solar, hydro

Natural Gas What is natural gas? It is a fossil fuel.

Properties of Natural Gas Its state of matter is a gas.

Properties of Natural Gas Odorless A chemical called mercaptan is added to natural gas for safety. Colorless

Properties of Natural Gas Lighter than air

Properties of Natural Gas Combustible

How Do We Use Natural Gas? Cleaner HotterBrighterReliable

Keep areas around furnace and water heater clutter-free. Do not store flammable or combustible materials near any gas appliances. Have natural gas appliances maintained and inspected. Play It Safe Inside Never inspect natural gas appliances without an adults supervision. Natural Gas Safety

Keep the area clean!

Natural Gas Safety Play It Safe Outside Do not play around natural gas equipment. Be pipeline aware. Gas Grill Gas Meter Pipeline Markers

Recognizing A Natural Gas Leak Signs of a gas leak Trust your senses! LEAVE, Tell an Adult if you notice any of these signs. Smell - Rotten egg - MERCAPTAN See - Bubbling water, blowing dirt Hear - Hissing sound

What To Do If You Suspect A Natural Gas Leak: DO leave the area immediately. DO tell an adult right away. DO go to a safe area, call 911 and your natural gas utility.

What Not To Do If You Suspect A Natural Gas Leak: Dont do anything that may create a spark. Dont try to repair the pipe or stop the leak. Dont return until natural gas employees say it is safe.

Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas. There is NO odor. Signs of CO poisoning: Headache, dizzy, drowsy, etc. What to do if you suspect CO poisoning: GET OUT and TELL AN ADULT!

Natural gas is safe, clean and efficient!
