In 1861 Texas became the seventh state to secede from the Union and join the Confederate States of America. Texans Fight for the Confederacy Although no major battles were fought on Texas soil, Texans contributed to the war by joining the Confederate army, fighting against Union forces, and defending the Gulf Coast. The Civil War Affects Life at Home Texans experienced many hardships during the war. Tensions arose between Union and Confederate supporters.
