Aids By Marco and Matteo

AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is a syndrome caused by a virus called HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). The disease alters the immune system, making people much more vulnerable to infections and diseases. This susceptibility worsens as the syndrome progresses. AIDS/HIV can be caused by unprotected sexual intercourse.

What are the symptoms, what is the treatment, and can it affect everyone? Symptoms: chronic fatigue, rapid weight loss, Vomiting, persistent, diarrhea, Nausea, cough and shortness of breath, recurring fever, chills, and night sweats, rashes, sores, or lesions in the mouth or nose, on the genitals, or under the skin. AIDS can affect every body system. The immune defect caused by having too few CD4 cells also permits some cancers that are stimulated by viral illnesses to happen. Some people with AIDS get forms of lymphoma and a rare tumor of blood vessels in the skin called Kaposi's sarcoma. In 1996, highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) was introduced for people with HIV and AIDS. Often referred to as the anti-HIV "cocktail", is a combination of three or more drugs, such as protease inhibitors and other anti-.retroviral medications. The virus doesn't survive well outside the body. So AIDS cannot be spread through casual contact with an infected person, such as by sharing drinking glasses, by casual kissing, or by coming into contact with the person's sweat or urine. The organ systems that AIDS affects is the immune system and the digestive system.

What organs do AIDS affect in the system Also some people develop rare cancers on the skin or immune system AIDS can affect the eyes, lungs, kidneys and the brain. Aids can also develop pneumonia, (difficulty to breathe and coughing frequently).

How is HIV/Aids transmitted? Sexual transmission - it can happen when there is contact with infected sexual fluids (rectal, genital, or oral mucous membranes). This can happen while having unprotected sexual intercourse. Perinatal transmission - a mother can pass the infection on to her child during childbirth, pregnancy, and also through breastfeeding. Blood transmission - the risk of transmitting HIV through blood transfusion is nowadays extremely low in developed countries, thanks to meticulous screening and precautions. However, among injection or IV drug users, sharing and reusing syringes contaminated with HIV- infected blood is extremely hazardous.

SCIENCE 8 Cells and Systems Unit Project Choose one disorder, disease or medical condition that could happen in one of the body systems: (digestive, circulatory, respiratory, excretory, skeletal, muscular or nervous). You can present the information in format of choice: poster, google slides Describe the disorder or disease: Slide 1:Title of disease/disorder /1 Slide 2: What is it? /3 How is it caused? /2 Picture of disease/disorder /3 Slide 3: What are the symptoms? /2 What is the treatment? /2 Can it affect everyone? /2Which system does it affect? /1 Slide 4: Which organs in the system does it affect? /1 Does it affect more than just the system you chose (eg: lung cancer affects the respiratory system but can also affect the circulatory system) /2 Slide 5 Describe the function of the affected body system (from slide 4) /3 List the organs involved with this system /2 Picture of the body system /2 Slide 6: Sources /2 Creativity of slides /2 OUT OF 30
