What is FASEB? A federation of 30 societies Representing over 130,000 researchers Our Mission… Advance health and welfare by promoting progress and education in biological and biomedical sciences through service to our member societies and collaborative advocacy.

What Do We Do? FASEB works with member societies and their representatives to develop policies and positions promoting research and education in the biological and biomedical sciences FASEB represents biological and biomedical researchers in policy discussions By speaking with a unified voice, our member societies can maximize their influence on public policy

Public Affairs Coordinate advocacy by scientists, for scientists Develop policy statements and advocacy strategies Conduct policy research Create advocacy tools Increase effectiveness through strength in numbers Provide full time support in Washington Gather strategic intelligence for decision making Provide experienced counsel Arrange meetings with policymakers Communicate with Member societies Advocacy partners Policymakers The general public

FASEB & Data Science/Sharing FASEB Statement on Data Management & Access Adopted March 2016 Affirmed that increasing data access can create new scientific opportunities Recommended that efforts to increase data access should consider the infrastructure required for data management Called for flexibility in data management and access policies Advised that regulatory and administrative burden should be minimized to promote science rather than hinder research NLM RFI on Data Science Research Opportunities FASEB response submitted November 2018 Emphasized the need for more core data resources (databases/ analytics) Encouraged NLM to take leadership on greater coordination of data science initiatives Recommended that NLM’s workforce efforts promote data literacy across the entire research enterprise NIH Data Science Strategic Plan FASEB comments to NIH RFI on draft strategic plan (April 2018) NIH should rapidly deploy at least minimal data standards across NIH databases and resources Ensure NIH-wide coordination, participation, and leadership Involve FASEB and other stakeholders in the plan’s implementation and assessment FASEB response to NIH Data Science RFI (December 2018) Highlighted concerns related to the definition of scientific data Recommended a phased implementation of a new data management and sharing policy
