The Nature of Technology Chapter 1, Section 3

What is Technology? Technology: how people change the world around them to meet their needs or to solve problems. What are some examples of technology? In addition to things people make, can be the knowledge and processes needed to produce such objects.

To improve the way people live. What is the purpose of technology? To improve the way people live. What are some examples of the way that technology has improved peoples lives? Ex: medicine to improve health, glasses to see, the internet to gain information

Science and Technology: Cousins? People who develop or create technology are called engineers. Engineers: use both technological and scientific knowledge to solve problems Science: the study of the natural world Technology: changes or modifies the natural world to meet human needs or to solve problems

How would a scientist vs. an engineer study wind? A scientist would talk about the sun and weather creating wind; an engineer would talk about how to harness wind to create electricity.

Impact on Society From the Stone Age, thousands of years ago, to the Information Age today, technology has impacted society, changing the way people live. Ex: Stone Age Ex: use stones to make tools, spears helped people to hunt for food and grow crops. Ex: Information age Ex: internet, cell phones, TV allows people to get information very quickly.
