Ch. 2 Two worlds meet

Ch. 2 Two Worlds Meet Earliest People Big Game Hunters Adaptation Migrated to the South as the glaciers pushed south. Mostly hunters and some gathering. We know they hunted big game thanks to the tools they left behind. World was very different. Mammoths, Mastodons, Giant Bison and diverse plant life. Climate was less dramatic than it is now. Adaptation Eventually, the climate began to change. Weather began to be more like what we have today. Some plants and animals were unable to adapt. Humans had to alter their houses, hunting patterns, and gathering habits.

Ch. 2 Two Worlds Meet Technology Early people in Kansas received new ideas from people in the east. New ideas Pottery Vessels Improved food storage. Bow and Arrow Improved hunting methods. Smaller Arrows traveled further & stronger bow shoots more powerfully Old methods used an atlatl (spear thrower) Cultivation People began to grow gardens.

Ch. 2 Two Worlds Meet Village Farming 800 years ago some people began to live in permanent villages. Most settlements overlooked rivers/streams. Homes Built with poles buried in the ground. Covered with grass and plastered with clay. Corn, beans, squash, and other crops began to be cultivated regularly. Food storage pits and “trash” are proof that these people were successful.

Ch. 2 Two Worlds Meet Tribes on the Plains American Indians have moved in and out of this region for thousands of years. These people lived in large family units called tribes. Wichita (First Tribe in KS), Osage, Pawnee, Kansa, Plains Apache The tribes did not speak the same language Wore varying styles of clothing Ate different foods Created different art These tribes lived closely to each other but remained civil. They did not believe in ownership of land.

Ch. 2 Two Worlds Meet Horses Buffalo We are unsure of when horses came to the Plains. They were acquired from the Spanish in the Southwest. Significant upgrade from dogs. Could carry bigger and heavier loads. Buffalo One of the most important resources on the Plains. Addition of horses made it easier to hunt buffalo. Tribes would travel seasonally to hunt buffalo herds. Tipi’s were created for easier transportation of homes.

Ch. 2 Two Worlds Meet Spanish Explorers First to arrive to the Plains through the Southwest. Francisco Vasquez de Coronado Spanish Conquistador In search for the seven cities of gold! Search for Quivira Land with wide rives, fish the size of horses, and boats with golden eagle statues.

Ch. 3 Kansas As a Crossroads Ch. 2 Two Worlds Meet French Exploration Second to arrive to the Plains through the North. Claude Charles Du Tisne He was sent to establish relations with the Comanche. Comanche had risen to be aggressor in Western Kansas. He failed, but was able to establish relations with other tribes. This set off a race to gain control of Kansas.
