Aim: How did African Nations gain their independence? Do Now/Motivation: Why do colonized nations want to have independence from their governing countries? (the mother countries)

Independent Nations in Africa Vocabulary Apartheid- Economic and political restrictions on the black people in Africa. The Afrikaans word for ‘apartness’. Sanctions – laws prohibiting a nation's businesses from buying or selling goods to a country that violates international law. The ANC – African National Congress; created by Nelson Mandela in 1990. Mandela – Became president of the multiracial government in Africa. Fought for Africa’s independence for over 30 years.
