Description of Workshop Activities NAM/CAR/SAM Quality Assurance Workshop Mark Rios Air Traffic Management Officer ICAO NACC Regional Office NAM/CAR/SAM Air Traffic Services Quality Assurance Workshop (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, 26 to 30 November 2001)

Introduction There will be five workshop activities and one workshop knowledge and skills exercise throughout the week. The purpose of the workshop activities is to provide some practical experience in the use of the quality assurance concepts, procedures, forms, and to generate discussions on the topics.

Introduction All participants are encouraged to actively engage in the workshop activities. The participants will be divided into small workgroups to complete each of the workshop activities. At the end of each workshop activity, time will be allotted to discuss and present the results of the activity.

Introduction The purpose of the knowledge and skills exercise that will be presented on the last day of the workshop is to reinforce the quality assurance concepts presented throughout the week.

Controller Proficiency Checks and related forms Participants will be provided with a scenario of a controller’s performance working an air traffic control operational position/sector. Participants will be tasked to rate the controller’s performance using the proficiency check process and form.

Air Traffic Incidents Reporting, Investigations and related forms Participants will be provided with a scenario of an ATS incident. The participants will act as an ATS incident investigation team, select an ATS incident investigator-in-charge, determine what occurred, the causal factors, make recommendations to prevent a reoccurrence, and present their findings to the group.

Air Traffic Evaluations and related forms Participants will be provided with a scenario of an ATS evaluation of certain elements. The participants will be tasked to rate the areas using the sample forms. The second part of this activity will be for the participants to select one item identified as unsatisfactory and write a response to the item using the Three-step closure process

Proficiency Training Programmes Participants will be tasked to develop a local annual proficiency training requirements list. The list of proficiency training requirements will be divided into four quarters and should pertain to their ATS unit.

Customer and Employee ATS Quality Assurance Survey Participants will be tasked to complete a customer/employee ATS Quality Assurance Survey of an ATS unit.

Workshop Knowledge/Skills Exercise The participants will be provided with a knowledge/skills exercise of questions related to the ATS Quality Assurance Guidance Material and presentations. Participants will answer the questions using the reference material provided. This will be followed by a review of the knowledge/skills exercise answers by the entire group.
