LEARN ABOUT TTM MATH JOURNAL Create goals Take notes during Focus activity Show your math work Include date, lesson, and activity Review with your teacher [We highly recommend having the students use the TTM Math Journal or a notebook while using the program to show their work. You can download a pdf of the journal by going to your teacher page, choosing SUPPORT and looking under KNOWLEDGE BASE for “Student Math Journal”. Below are our best practices for using the TTM Math Journal. Feel free to modify these as you see fit.] I want to make sure that you’re doing your best on all the activities. Here are my expectations for how you’ll be using your journal/notebook. Write your goals at the beginning of the week and note how you did when you make your goals for the next week. We will review these goals together frequently. Take notes and show your work as you do the math. Always label these entries with the date, lesson, and activity. I will collect your journals to see how you are doing. [Tell students how often you will do this.]

SUCCESS WHAT TO DO Wear headphones Do your best More points for correct answers Bonus points for passing Post-Quiz Use Learning Coach and Live Teacher help Help may allow you to answer correctly on the first try Guessing earns fewer points Make sure you always have headphones on. You can click a button to have the text read to you and there is a lot of audio in the program. Always try your best. You will earn the most points if you answer the question right on the first try. You also get a huge point bonus if you pass your post-quiz. Click the learning coach and Math Help buttons. Read the instruction given. If it doesn’t solve your problem, keep asking for help until you either understand the problem or get to the live help. You don’t lose points for using help.

GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS WHAT TO DO Individual Goals Create goals with teacher and record in TTM Math Journal Use help to answer correctly on first or second try TTM Class Reward Pizza or Wal-Mart e-gift card Class Goal Every student completes 20 lessons Brainstorm award with your teacher and class Now I want to make sure that you all know what your goals are for working on TTM. Our goal is that we’ll all pass at least 1 target lesson per week. If we can keep to that goal, I’ll reward the class with [insert reward here]. Also, our class can choose a class reward to work towards. We can choose between ____ and _____. [Either give students two choices or brainstorm something acceptable to you.] Which one do we want to work towards? We’ll have some time in class to work on TTM each week, but you may need to find some time outside of class to work on it as well. Some of you may not have a computer at home. Who can tell me where you can access the program? Answers: Library at school or local library School – during class, before/after school, at lunch A friend’s house who has the Internet and take turns on TTM A relative’s house After school program or a local YMCA Through TTM, we can select a class reward that we want to work towards. That reward will require us to contribute 1,000,000 points. If we do that we can earn a pizza party or a gift card for classroom supplies. Which one do you want to work towards? OPTIONAL: In addition, I want to challenge you all as a class. My challenge is to get all of you to complete at least 20 lessons. Once we reach that goal we will have [insert reward here].

NEXT STEPS GET STARTED Use the info on your start card Go to thinkthroughmath.com Enter username and password Spend 5 minutes getting set up Select your Learning Coach Design your avatar Start with the Placement Activity Show the math you know Everyone will get some wrong. That is how the program knows what you need to learn. Now let’s get started! We are going to access the Internet using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as your Internet browser. Next, I want you to navigate to the website, thinkthroughmath.com. Click Login and enter your username and password that is on your Start Card. I’m going to let you spend 5 minutes selecting your learning coach and customizing your avatar. Then you will begin your Placement Test. The very first thing you’ll be doing is a placement test that will make sure you start out with the lessons that are right for you. It will ask you about 15 to 20 questions and you won’t be able to ask for help. Also, the questions will get more difficult or easier depending on how you do. Don’t worry if you don’t know the math. That’s expected. Just do your best. This test is trying to figure out where you need to start in Think Through Math.
